James died on January 19, 1968 in Quang Nam Province,
Republic of South Vietnam.

James's death was a result of an enemy explosive device. His body was recovered.

James's religion was Lutheran & Missouri Synod.

James's name is listed on Panel 42E --- Line 13
of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
